Not Every Closed Eye Is Fall Asleep

Maria, her mother and her six-year old brother Tim were in the living room. They had just finished lunch. It was a standing rule in the house that after lunch. Tim was not allowed to play downstairs.
Maria saw Tim sneak out of the door. She wondered if her mother saw him too. Maria watched him as he tiptoed out of the room and down the stairs.
“Tim,” her mother’s voice rang out. “Come back.”
“How did you know he went out, Mother,” Maria asked. “I thought you weren’t looking at him.”
“Well, Maria,” her mother smiled “remember the saying,”’Not every closed eye is asleep’”
“What do you mean by that, Mother?” asked Maria.
“It means that people often pretend not to see things when in reality they know everything that’s going on. Take, for example, a girl who cheats in class. The teacher may not say anything, but he or she probably knows everything the girl is doing. We grown-ups notice many things, but we don’t say anything about them. Our eyes seem to be closed nut we are not asleep, we know what’s going on, quite well.”
“That’s a good proverb,” Maria exclaimed. “ I like it,” Maria repeated the proverb to herself.
